Our specialist team is comprised of a unique mix of naval architects, structural engineers, mechanical engineers, lifting engineers, and project managers, as well as hydraulics and control systems specialists.


Our diverse range of skills and expertise enables us to deliver bespoke solutions for our clients, whether the task is in their workshop, on site inland, at the water’s edge or at sea above and below the waterline.

Gary Paterson, Director

Gary is our Director, joining Malin in 2014 after completing an MEng in Aeronautical Engineering at The University of Glasgow. Gary has a broad experience on the logistics side of Oil & Gas projects, most notably working as an in-house Heavy Lift Specialist on the TCO project. In addition to being AP (Appointed Person) qualified, he also specialises in seafastening design, and  global and local structural checks on vessels and barges.

james bowie, engineering director

James began his career as a summer intern with Malin Abram, before gaining a degree in Naval Architecture and joining full time as a graduate. Having worked through the graduate programme, he graduated to the post of Naval Architect and then Team Lead, before securing the Engineering Director position. James has experience in a variety of projects from marine heavy lift transportation to design and manufacture of bespoke jigs and has been involved in major site operations worldwide.

Chris cairns, commercial director

Chris is the Commercial Director of Malin Abram.  Having graduated in 2011 with a degree in Quantity Surveying, Chris spent the first 5 years of his career in the oil and gas industry with a worldwide oil and gas subsea contractor in Aberdeen, where he managed numerous high profile tenders for major oil and gas projects.  Chris joined Malin Abram in 2016, where he has enjoyed being involved with tendering various heavylift and marine scopes and seeing them through to project execution.  Chris is responsible for the teams’ tendering activities, ensuring compliance and tender deadlines are achieved.

Gordon Sloan, technical director

Gordon Sloan is a Time Served Engineer with extensive experience in the fields of heavy engineering (Motherwell Bridge Group) & marine operations (Henry Abram & Sons Limited). His specific areas of his experience include: Structural Design, Heavy Lift Operations, Transportation (Road & Marine), Seafastening Design, Marine Superintendence, Marine Procedures & Operations. His extensive experience has been gained travelling throughout the UK and overseas experience throughout Europe, Israel and Canada.

shane hand, Naval Architect Team Lead

Shane brings a range of specialist skills to the team, with over 7 years of naval architecture experience spanning design and consultancy of workboats, passenger ships, fishing boats and more recently some Hydrogen powered vessels. Having grown up around the fishing industry and working on his family passenger ships he has developed a practical knowledge of problem solving. His main areas of experience cover design, specification writing, stability analysis, Class and Flag discussion, skills which earned him the accolade of ‘Young professional green energy awards innovator of the year’ in 2019.

alan mundie, senior project engineer

Alan has recently joined Malin Group as a Senior Project Engineer with a background in the Offshore Renewables, Ship Management, and Oil and Gas sectors. Prior to joining Malin, he has been involved in a range of projects, including the transport and installation of floating wind turbines, asset management of FPSO’s, and providing warranty services for offshore transports. Positioned within Malin Abram, he will primarily be involved with heavy lift and marine transportation projects.

Iain MacLeod, Senior Naval Architect

Iain joins the Malin Group as a Senior Naval Architect, bringing an array of skills and experience. Having attained a Master of Engineering (MEng) focused in Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering from the University of Strathclyde, Iain subsequently developed an enviable portfolio of projects, across a number of years in the oil & energy industry. Iain offers proven practical skills, as well as expertise across a number of key areas including Structural Design and Analysis, Inspection, and Stability. Through his role he will work on a variety of key projects, including our iconic Type 26 project.

David Cooper, naval architect

David joined Malin Group in 2018, after graduating from the University of Strathclyde with a Masters Degree in Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering. Since Starting with Malin Group, David has played a key role as project engineer on the load out and float off of the recent Offshore Patrol Vessels, producing all calculations and documentation and assisting with site operations. With expertise across stability analysis and Load-Out and Float- Off operations, alongside a broad understanding of various marine operations, David has more recently been involved in the engineering and operations management of the Type 26 block moves and upcoming Load-Out and Float-Off of HMS Glasgow.

helenor fisher, brand manager

Helenor comes to Malin Abram with over 15 years of marketing experience, with a diverse range of skills spanning brand development, copywriting, design, digital and website development and marketing strategy. Prior to joining the Malin Group, she worked extensively in the Higher Education sector (Glasgow University and Glasgow Caledonian University), involving projects on a worldwide scale, as well as for Skills Development Scotland. Since joining the group, she has worked to build brand awareness, through the creation of digital and hard copy materials, combined with targeted advertising and content marketing.

laura henderson, sales & marketing assistant

Laura comes to the Malin Group with over 10 years of sales experience, with a diverse range of skills in developing client relationships, driving sales & marketing initiatives and researching potential markets. Although new to the Marine Industry, her previous roles have strengthened her abilities in driving to learn new skills and working on her personal ‘can do approach’.
